We’ve all had buddies return from trips to the Far East with a fresh wardrobe of perfectly cut custom suits and shirts and a story about how outrageously inexpensive it all was. And many of us reacted with jealousy to such stories, though this envy was offset a bit by the knowledge that it was made in Asia, and thus likely completely junk and bound to dissolve at the cleaners.

Well, the bad news is that it’s now pretty clear that we were wrong about the quality thing, as evidenced by the fact that even high-end men’s designers are now having their clothes made in Asia. The good news, however, is that you no longer have to go there to get them. Nicholas Joseph Custom Tailors (based in Chicago) and Indochino (based in Vancouver) are two in a growing number of businesses that outsource their customer’s measurements, and are able to offer custom tailoring at drastically reduced prices for it.
