Where she got her start: Designing bespoke shirts for men under the label Van Aken in her Rittenhouse studio.

How she got into uniform design: She met Alfred Portale, chef/owner of NYC’s famed Gotham Bar and Grill, at a cocktail party in Philly in 2006. He dug her style, and asked her to create uniforms for both Gotham and Gotham Steak, his Miami spin-off.

While Hong Kong has long been known as a custom clothing center, many don’t know that much of the tailoring is actually done over the border in Shanghai.  Shanghai is probably the least expensive place on the planet to purchase custom made clothing, rivaled only by Vietnam.

Rather than buy in the large markets, this video shows how to get things done cheaply.  And in Shanghai, the bargains are unbelieveable.

The intro is not in English, but the rest of the video is.  If don’t mind the so-so production values of the video, you’ll see a side of Shanghai most people don’t.  And it is worth watching the video to the end simply to see what he pays for a custom 3-piece suit.
